What do all of these have in common? They are songs that rock my world at Nickie Carrigan Fitness: The Warehouse!
While the scientific connection between music and working out is still being debated, this much I know is true…the music at The Warehouse is what MAKES ME LOSE CONTROL… or, in other words, the music makes me forget that I actually can’t breathe or move another muscle! To be honest, the music takes the “pain” away for me. If I were in the U.S. Marines, I would have their motto of “pain is weakness leaving the body” tattooed on my arm while rocking to the tunes at The Warehouse.
When I hear “Flower” during Nickie Carrigan’s Bootcamp class at the Warehouse, I know what I am in for…. one hell of a good arm and leg workout. You might not recognize the name of that song, but all of us sure know “Bring Sally up, bring Sally down!” How about “just” a warm-up with Nickie to Britney Spears’ “Work B**tch”? You call that a WARM-UP??? That song is a complete workout in just 2 minutes! Nickie says that although Brittney Spears is just a bubble gum pop star, “The message in the song, and the upbeat tempo is a great way to help people shake off their day, and remind them work for what they want in life, b**tch!” (She uses that word in nicest way.) |
Two of Paul Theisen’s favorite workout songs are “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars and “Come On” by Andy Hunter. “They both have a fast tempo, and big crescendos that help motivate the members. I love to use music and the volume of that music to bring up the intensity of a class,” Paul T. says. “If a class is lethargic or moving slow, I up the volume with these two songs, and people wake up, and go for it!”
Jessica Theisen, aka “Miss Mix-A-Lot”, is Paul T’s partner-in crime in creating some of his playlists. “To me the music in a group fitness class is as important as the workout plan,” says Jessica. “I love to bring songs together that can motivate and encourage people. I like to blend current songs and classic songs that create the right energy in a class.”
Insanity with Marc Carrigan? I’m going to let you in on a little secret. I really don’t think I hear the music because I am just wondering when in the heck am I going to hear the beep that lets me know that I survived and that I can move on to the next exercise? Let me hear Shaun T. yell, “We good y’all? I’m smilin cause I love it!”
One of my personal favorites is “Eye of the Tiger”. When Paul T. plays the theme for Rocky during HIIT Combat class, who doesn’t feel like a prize fighter hitting a bag working out to that???
That said, we don’t need the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps when we have The Warehouse trainers and their awesome music to help us go the distance!! All I need is a side of beef hanging in The Warehouse and I’ll be all set. Oh, and I’ll be working on those one-handed pushups too. … It's the eye of the tiger… It's the thrill of the fight…Risin' up to the challenge…of The Warehouse.
