As I went through my spring cleaning frenzy over the last few weeks, I found a few of my old diet weight loss plans I have tried over the years: Weight Watchers, Atkins, Body for Life, and LA Weight Loss. More recently, I can add the 21-Day Fix, Keto, Whole 30, 3-Day Refresh, Whole 30, and Shakeology to my list. Oh…and I can’t forget the cabbage soup diet I tried “back in the day”! I’ve barely touched the surface of what was in vogue in the past and what’s in vogue today. And more importantly, when will I ever stop this madness that I think there is a magic solution to weight loss? The ironic thing is that I have seen some results trying each and every one of these weight loss methods. The truth, however, is that I give up after a week or two and resort to mindless eating and to my old habits. I then go through the cycle of waking up on a Monday morning and telling myself “today is the day that I am going to stick with XYZ weight loss plan”. And I start all over again. I don’t like reflecting on the fact that weight loss has been on my mind for at least 35 years. 35 years! Think about that for a minute. As much as I believe in changing oneself, I don’t like thinking that for 35 years I have felt that I am not good enough, not skinny enough, or not perfect enough. My head hurts just thinking about it. My heart hurts even more. Is body shaming a part of it? Is the public image of the perfect runway model a part of it? Is it something in my childhood that makes me think that I am less than perfect? Is it the high school athlete in me that can no longer run a 7.5-minute mile (hey, that was good for me!) or speed down the track in a 100-yard-dash? Is it my college boyfriend questioning my decision to eat a piece of apple pie? (and did I really need the ice cream too?!) Don’t take this as a negative discussion on weight loss plans, but rather take this post as a reminder that YOU ARE ENOUGH. Do what you feel you want to do or need to do, but do it loving yourself. Do it with a smile on your face and even a bigger smile in your heart. Be flexible and try new fitness challenges and nutrition plans that you find interesting. Change is the spice of life! Don’t feel like a failure if you get derailed with your plans or goals. Get up, brush yourself off, and try, try again! YOU are what is in vogue today and YOU ARE ENOUGH! |
